You have heard about text-based mmorpg games, and you want to know more. Read on, and discover the history, attraction and how text based web games have evolved over the years.

Before computers could comfortably render rich graphics, text-based RPGs were run on college networks over extremely slow dial-up connections. Best known as MUDs (multi-user dungeons), many of these text based RPGs have been modified for play over the web via a MUD client, or most recently, a web browser.

Most text-based RPGs have little or no graphics. Like the offline style role playing games, they rely on the written word, random numbers, and statistics. The game can be played over a slow internet connection, and they can handle large numbers of concurrent player, often known as MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). Another distinct advantage to text based RPGs is that they have much lower system requirements than graphical games, enabling them to be played on pretty much any computer connected to the Internet. Many serious gamers also play them on handheld gadgets and cell phones.

All text based browser games worth their salt will have the ability to build an in-game character, improve their skills, health, wealth, equipment, status etc, and complete tasks in the game. Over the past 3 years, the landscape has changed and with so much competition, players expectations are generally higher and building a successful text based game demands time, effort and constant feature updates. The best text games are addictive and retain loyal players for many months or years.

Facebook saw the appeal in text based MMORPGs and has recently launched Mafia Wars, Farmville and Frontierville, produced by Zynga. Although much more graphical than the original text based rpg games, the game play is almost identical to most other text-based browser games.

Take a look at Torn, Farmville, Frontierville or many others, if you want to give text-based rpg games a try.

Tell me about text based browser games and why are they so damn addictive?

Many years ago, before computers had graphical abilities, text-based mmorpg games were being played on university LANs over super slow dial-up connections. Best known as multi user dungeons (MUDs), many of these text based web games have been altered for play over the web via a MUD client, or most recently, a modern web browser. Most text-based mmorpg games do not have graphics. Similar to the offline style role playing games, they rely on the written word, random numbers, and statistics. A slow internet connection has very little impact on game play, and can handle a huge number of users, often known as Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG ).

Another advantage to text-based RPGs is that they have much lower system requirements than graphical games, enabling them to be enjoyed on pretty much any computer connected to the web. Some people are even playing them on handheld gadgets and modern cellphones.

All text based games worth their salt must have the power to create a virtual character, improve their skills, weapons, equipment, status etc, and complete tasks in the game. Over recent years, the landscape has changed and with so much competition, expectations are much, much higher and developing a successful text based rpg game requires time, effort and constant feature updates. Good text mmorpg games are addictive and retain loyal players for months, and sometimes, years. Facebook, the social media giant, saw the attraction in text based web games and launched Farmville, Mafia Wars and Frontierville, produced by Zynga. Although more commercialised and graphical than the first text based browser games, under the hood, they are almost identical to the majority of other text-based MMORPGs. If you fancy giving text based games a try, why not start with Torn, Farmville or SimRocker.

Soccer Online - England Beat Fantasy Football World Cup

Possibly something you did not expect to hear this year after the poor performance by the real England team in their World Cup football games, however in the virtual World Cup tournament put on by Football Superstars, England reigned supreme. Football Superstars exists as a massively multi-player online game, referred to as an MMO.

While England were defeated in the 2010 South African World Cup by Germany, the virtual team did a whole lot better in the Football Superstars MMO World Cup tournament. Maybe there is something England football related that may be lauded this year. The virtual England team bested typical rivals the Germans in the group stages, holding up much better in the virtual world they managed to hold on to a 1-1 draw. The German team then started to lose 2-1 to the Ukraine, hitting them surprisingly out of the fantasy football world cup in the group stages, something that would be hard to believe in the real world. The England Quarter Final game displayed a large 9-1 stomping against Lithuania, who were just not on the same level as the England team, giving them a much needed confidence boost heading into their Semi Final game against the much anticipated Portuguese team. The game began well for the English team as they came out on the attack, the midfield saw some fierce battles with England finally coming out on top, winning 4-2 in a well played game. Russia turned into the team to best in the final, and England knew this, going from the first whistle and managing to go 1-0 up within the first minute. The Russian team eventually retaliated, knowing they needed to equalize quickly to be within a chance, and so they did. Scoring a goal from an interception after a terrible clearance by the England keeper, the Russians pulled even; however, it was short-lived, as an almost identical goal was scored by the England team at the other end. While Russia tried their best to get back in the game and had some promising counter attacks, the end result went England’s way as they managed to land a number of goals. The Russian team demonstrated a lot of heart, but were just out matched and seemed unable to muster the energy needed to turn the game around. Football Superstars PMC World Cup had England turn into the World Champions for the first time when the final whistle went off. Commenting on the event Andre Ruddick the CyberSports Community Manager labelled it a huge success, thanks to the passion of all those involved and the great organization from each team. It was the most substantial event hosted yet by Football Superstars. He went on to thank everybody who participated, and congratulate England for their victory and playing well throughout the tournament. There will be more World Cup tournaments continuing in the year.
