Do You Want to Work Overseas?

Gaining employment in Thailand as a foreigner normally means taking up an English teaching position. Even though there are well paid English teaching positions in institutions like Thammasat or Chulalongkorn, the vast majority of such posts are often poorly paid.

As a matter of fact, don’t expect a high salary for any job requiring skills, teaching or otherwise. It does sound all bad, but actually if you aspire to live in the Land of Smiles for a few years, such low salaries aren’t a worry since the cost of living is very low in Thailand, the infrastructure is the best in South East Asia, it’s a friendly and safe country, yet you can crawl up the career ladder because you can gain a great work experience in Thailand.

Yet there’s an obscured problem that only shows itself over time: so you’ve been working in the Land of Smiles for a couple of years, you’ve gained good work experience, your wage is low, but so what : the cost of living is low so that’s OK. BUT, guess what? You’ve not been able to actually BANK much money while you’ve been living in Thailand. The cost of air tickets look ridiculously expensive in comparison to your salary. The price of things back home gets to panic you when thinking about your Thai wage slip. This dilemma hits a lot of non-Thai nationals in Thailand a year or two after deciding to work there. Lasting future plans can often be put on hold since you don’t have the savings to put into action any plan like buying a property, buying a car, or getting married.

Therefore, key point : when thinking about staying in Thailand, it’s wise to also consider that it is very difficult to save substantial quantities of hard currency when considering the prices of “back home”.

However, it’s not all about cash is it? You can gain a wonderful experience in Thailand, perhaps acquire the language, make friends, travel around Thailand in your freetime, and acquire some valuable work experience.

So what sort of work placements can you find in Thailand? Looking at jobs-quality.com - a site listing positions in the Bangkok and Chonburi districts of Thailand - they have listed Human Resource job positions, Admin work placements, sales executive work placements, Quality Assurance and Control jobs in Thailand etc. Basically the types of work placements you’d discover in your home country. Even though the majority of these posts may be seeking a Thai national who speaks Thai, you will still find English-speaking prerequisites for posts within many multinational companies based in Thailand.
