When we decided to move to Mexico, one of the most exciting things that popped into my mind was that I would get a new Internet Service Provider and finally get off the 300,000,000 Spam lists that I was on. I thought for sure I would go insane if I received one more “How to Enlarge Your Manhood” piece of Spamas if I needed to do that anyway (yeah right).

But alas, there are things in life that you cannot escape no matter where you flee and Spam is one of them.

The funny thing is, there apparently is not a market for the “How to Enlarge your Manhood” spam here in Mexico. I dare not speculate why although I would very much like to know. I am however, too squeamish to even think of bringing up the issue with anyone, much less my Mexican pals who have internet access. Besides, I cannot even begin to figure out how to ask the question in Spanishegad!–how on earth would I translate, “manhood”?

I am going to have a nightmare over that.

Anyway, I am getting Spam here in Mexico. They have finally found me. For the first year of being here in Guanajuato, we didn’t have a computer but used the Internet Cafes. Now that we do, it is as if we have become a spaminator-magnet. Just how do they locate you?

I wish I had a Person-who-is-a-Spammer magnet so I could locate all the Spammers and then give them a good spam-slapping.
This morning, I opened my hotmail account (Oh God! Do you think I’ve just tipped off more Spaminators by telling them I have a hotmail account?) and lo and behold, there was Spam waiting for me!

The subject line read “Miracle Burn”. Miracle burn? This was the first time in my life I had ever heard of a burn being a miracle. No thank you, I thought, burns tend to hurt no matter if you call them a miracle or not. But, I had to see what this was so I opened the stupid e-mail. (Do you think opening the thing sends some secret, “We’ve got a sucker”, signal, over the Internet, to the ones who sent this me in the first place? Is that how they do it?)

It turns out that this spam was talking about a fat-burning discovery hitherto unknown to anyone else on the planet. In all the history of humanity, just nowmaybe even hours agosomeone discovered a new and unknown solution to burning fat off your overfed and overindulged fat body.

Let’s stop here and ask,

Hoodia is supposed to be,

Will you just imagine that! One little molecule will bloat you up like a toad so you won’t want to go the Dunkin Donuts and wolf down a dozen or so of something gooey and wonderful.

I don’t know about you but if someone offered me a dozen or so of compound “P57″ (What does the “P” stand fordon’t anyone dare write me and tell me!) or as it is commonly called, “Hoodia”, I would turn and run the other way with a box of gooey glazed under my arm.

That is today’s Spaminator story. I wonder what tomorrow may bring. In the meantime, I urge you to stay away from Hoodia or anything that even looks like a compound named “P57″!

Many people come into the gym wanting to gain muscle. I watch them amble from bench to bench, machine to machine, training every muscle group with no discipline.

After months of trying this method realization begins to dawn on the “weight lifter” that they have not achieved the desired results. Discipline is the simple mistake that is not followed by many. There are plenty of different training methods to follow, but as a beginner you will see a big improvement in gaining muscle by following this simple training system.

Training day 1 - Back, Legs and Biceps

Training day 2 - Chest, Shoulders and Triceps

And repeat back to day 1

The reason why this training schedule is so effective is because these muscle groups compliment each other. All exercises have a primary and secondary muscle that is used in every movement. The following is an example of this -

While using the chest press (also known as bench press) you are training your chest (pectoral muscles), this is classed as the primary muscle group but this exercise also trains another muscle group (the triceps) which is classed as a secondary muscle.

By following this method you will feel and see the results in a lot quicker time.

I would also suggest maximizing your full potential by changing your weight lifting exercises every 6 weeks or so. The reason you ask…well your body gets used to the movements you are doing in your exercises so what you need to do is “shock” your body by changing the exercises regularly this way you will not hit a plateau and should keep seeing improvements.

The Treadmill - The Best Calorie Burner?

DM, I have a question. I currently do cardio 3-4X/week using either a treadmill and a cross-trainer (them ski-like things that work the arms and the legs) and I find that the calorie counter shows that I burn more calories using the cross-trainer rather than the treadmill. I hear a lot of people who say that the treadmill is the best calorie burner. My trainer says that the cross-trainer is better as it works the upper and the lower body. In your opinion, who is right? Or could my technique be wrong?

Dear amirfuadh,

Good question. In fact, this is an issue I’ve always wanted to address. Honestly, if you ask me - DONT BELIEVE EVERYTHING THE CALORIE COUNTER TELLS YOU. It is not 100% accurate as there is no way that lifeless machine is able to predict your BMI (Body Mass Index), fitness level, body composition (percentage of fat/muscle), metabolism - all key factors that determine how many calories you burn for any given exercise/time period.

Even if the machine allows you to key in your own bodyweight, it will not be able to differentiate you from a similar weighted chimpanzee. In one of the gyms I’ve been to, they have a row of steppers - some are brand new and some are from a previous batch, and though I know I’m getting a killer cardio workout from the newer ones… (I gasp for breath and sweat way more) they STILL always give a much lower ‘calorie consumed’ reading when compared to the older ones, which are so much more ‘confortable’ to use and exercise with. Something’s definitely not wrong here. The machines probably need calibration, etc… but I hope you get my point.

As for which machine burns more calories.. the crosstrainer or the treadmill - well, the answer is not that straightforward. For example, if you’re running at top speed and top intensity on the treadmill.. you’re definitely going to exceed the calories the crosstrainer can ever burn (how fast can you really go on a crosstrainer?). So, exercise INTENSITY plays a role.

Ok, now lets assume that if your intensity level is exactly the same on both machines (which is also difficult to establish since they’re both different), but for the sake of this example, let’s assume the intensity is the same. Then, I too, would certainly say that the crosstrainer would ultimately burn more calories.. why? For the same reason your trainer mentioned - simply because you’re utilising both your upper body and lower body muscles.

Don’t get me wrong - The treadmill is indeed an excellent calorie burner, suitable for people from all fitness levels. You can walk, brisk-walk, run, sprint - the possibilities are endless. But for it to be the ‘best calorie burner’ - you need to bump up your intensity. In fact, I too would like to say that it is INDEED the best calorie burner - BUT, walking and brisk walking on the ‘best calorie burner’ isnt gonna give you what you’re thinking. Provided you’re intense enough on the treadmill, only then will it be the best calorie burner. You reap what you sow, and there’s no easy way out. Hope I’ve cleared your doubts.

The only special requirement is a reasonably good pair of walking shoes and appropriate clothing. There are many people who enjoy performing this type of activity since it doesn’t really feel as though they are doing any specific kind of aerobic exercise. Many have increased their fitness levels to the point where they actually enjoy going jogging or running.

The thing to keep in mind with exercising is that any type of aerobic activity is effective as long as it is adhered to regularly and when it is performed on the right fitness level to suit the person doing the exercises.
